Soju costs several times more in Malaysia than it does in a Korean convenience store, and the reason is tax and freight rather than the drink itself.

  • Soju is taxed as a distilled spirit, not as a beer. Malaysian excise duty on spirits is charged against the alcohol content, so a 16% bottle carries a far heavier duty load per ringgit of shelf price than a 5% lager does.
